A City Adventure With Twiggy

2529web

The Perth central city has always been NEAR the Swan River but the main shopping precinct is a few blocks up from it.  That meant there was this beautiful river with… well… kinda nothing there.  So they built a brand new Quay which was opened to the public a few months ago.  Perth being a very suburban place, the average person who doesn’t work in the city, doesn’t have much need to go there often, so I still hadn’t seen the new Elizabeth Quay.  After a school holidays filled with sickness and being cooped up inside, I decided we were due an adventure and we planned a trip on the ferry from South Perth over to the new spot to explore.  And of course, we had to give our holiday visitor, the school turtle Twiggy, a good adventure before he went back to school and to visit a new child.

I could have just driven to the city but where’s the fun in that?!  When Scarlett first brought Twiggy home, she said she wanted to take him on a boat, and the ferry seemed the perfect plan.

Off we set toward the ferry terminal – Scarlett looking a little unsure!

We had just missed a ferry so we had a little play at the playground while we waited for the next one.

First on the agenda – ice cream!  Luckily the ice cream shop was opening up just as we arrived on the doorstep.

After a delicious ice cream in the sun, we decided to head over the curvy bridge to explore.

Scarlett decided she wanted to check out the Bell Tower (the tall pointy building).

Up we go in the elevator (that I had trouble looking out the window of!) to the top viewing deck of the Bell Tower!

Next down to see the bells ringing.

And the bell ringers doing the ringing!

And out (through the gift shop of course!) to let Isla stretch her legs at the playground.

After meeting friends for a yummy lunch, it was time to hop back on the ferry, gift shop purchase clutched in hand.

Once across, we decided to squeeze the last ounces out of the day with one last play at the playground.

Scarlett told me on the ferry home “I wish this day could start all over again.”  I think that means our adventure was a success 🙂

Leaving Perth

Digital

* Digital

In February of this year (2014), we got some good news.  After a year of job hunting, five months of which we were without an income, Daddy C got offered a really great job!  There was only one catch – it wasn’t in our city of residence, Perth.  It was in New Zealand.  There were lots of positives though – Scarlett’s nana and aunties live just two hours drive from the town we’d be moving to and the career opportunity was too good to pass up.  So it was decided – we were moving to my home country of New Zealand!

We had just a couple of weeks to pack up our life and go – it was stressful but we enjoyed our last couple of weeks of sunshine and got it all sorted in the end!  Then we were flying off via two plane flights and a full day’s journey to New Zealand with little Miss Two in tow… which went rather better than I had feared!

These are a few photos (mostly shot on film) of our last few days in Perth and our trip to New Zealand.

eFeb14FujiS800AA024A random bag they made me photograph at security when I asked for my film to be hand checked rather than x-rayed!

The flights were long but the monkey coped surprisingly well, with the aid of the portable DVD player and lots of Peppa Pig!  Finally we arrived in New Zealand and Scarlett was able to spend some time with family that she hadn’t seen in months 🙂

eFeb14FujiS800AA030Aunty Jessie was very excited to be acquainted with Peppa Pig…

For those playing at home: Apart from the two digital ones, these were all shot on my Canon Elan IIe film camera.  The first bunch are on Lomography 400 film and scanned by Film Frenzy.  From the picture of our house onwards, the film stock was Fuji Superia 800 and scanned by myself on my Pakon.

We Finally Made It To The Beach!

When we first decided to build our house, one of the things that drew me to this location was the fact that there is a coastline and beach just 5 minutes drive from the house site.  And yet, we moved in and somehow just never made it to the beach!  At first we didn’t have a car, and it really is just that little bit too far to walk.  Then we got a car… but it was winter… and life settled into a routine… and we just never got around to it.

A few weeks ago I decided I really needed to check out this local beach!  So Scarlett and I popped down for a quick little visit.  It’s gorgeous!!  Fairly secluded and quiet but totally stunning, it felt like being on holiday and it was less than 5 minutes drive from our house!

As soon as we got over the sand dune, Scarlett started pointing at the ocean and emiting her little interested noises “ah!  ah!”  I put her on the sand and she started racing off towards the water!  I didn’t let her go in this time because I wanted to go to the shops afterwards, but we definitely have to head back there soon with togs and towel and let her go for it in the wet sand.
