A City Adventure With Twiggy

2529web

The Perth central city has always been NEAR the Swan River but the main shopping precinct is a few blocks up from it.  That meant there was this beautiful river with… well… kinda nothing there.  So they built a brand new Quay which was opened to the public a few months ago.  Perth being a very suburban place, the average person who doesn’t work in the city, doesn’t have much need to go there often, so I still hadn’t seen the new Elizabeth Quay.  After a school holidays filled with sickness and being cooped up inside, I decided we were due an adventure and we planned a trip on the ferry from South Perth over to the new spot to explore.  And of course, we had to give our holiday visitor, the school turtle Twiggy, a good adventure before he went back to school and to visit a new child.

I could have just driven to the city but where’s the fun in that?!  When Scarlett first brought Twiggy home, she said she wanted to take him on a boat, and the ferry seemed the perfect plan.

Off we set toward the ferry terminal – Scarlett looking a little unsure!

We had just missed a ferry so we had a little play at the playground while we waited for the next one.

Once across, we decided to squeeze the last ounces out of the day with one last play at the playground.

Scarlett told me on the ferry home “I wish this day could start all over again.”  I think that means our adventure was a success 🙂

Christmas Day 2014 {on film}

1F1050024

Well, here we are, arrived back in Perth and before we knew it, Christmas was upon us!  Scarlett enjoyed putting out food for Santa and the reindeer, and woke up to lots of pressies under the tree.  Unfortunately Adam had to work in the afternoon, so I decided to take Scarlett to the beach which was just beautiful and was the perfect was to spend Christmas evening.

Because we’re living in a temporary furnished apartment, I don’t have my computer to edit digital photos, so I decided to shoot a roll of film on Christmas day.  I shot this roll of Fuji Superia 400 in my Canon Elan IIe and these are straight scans from a local camera shop.  They aren’t perfect and some of the colours are a bit funky but I’m not going to adjust them.  Cos you know what, film is imperfect and a bit funky and that is the fun of it.  I’m tired of always questing after perfection in my photography.  This year I’m aiming for less perfection and more fun and creative freedom!

{IShootFilm} Kodak Portra 400 – December 2013

1373RAINFORD-R2-28ed

The second roll of film I shot was Kodak Portra 400.  This is a professional grade film that is basically seen as the bees knees of film by a lot of photographers.  Maybe because I was expecting such great things, I was a little disappointed.  The colour profile wasn’t entirely my cup of tea, I found it quite washed out and without the strong colour and contrast I usually like to put in my photos.  I’m going to experiment with other types of film to see if there is another more suited to me, but I also intend to have a bit more of a play with Portra, especially with under and overexposing it, to see if I can find a sweet spot with it.  Of course, it probably also has to do with my own need to adjust to film colour, which seems to be pretty unique.

These were all taken on my Canon AE-1 Program with an FD 50mm f1.8 lens.

{IShootFilm} My First Roll of Film – Kodak Ektar 100

1373RAINFORD-R1-2

I got my first rolls of film back finally, having sent them away before Christmas.

I have to say, that whole process is definitely one of the fun things about film.  Not having that instant feedback, having to wait for this little surprise package of images, is extremely fun.

I sent away four rolls of film, two colour and two black and white.  One of my biggest surprises, as a lover of colour and light, is that I actually loved the black and white images much more than the colour.  The colour ones were not quite what I was expecting.  I found them quite often a bit too washed out with strange colour tones.  It is entirely possible that this is due to user error, or that I have been so ingrained in the digital era of true colour rendition that colour film will have to grow on me as an acquired taste.  However I am also going to play around with a few different colour films, with adjusting the way I expose them, and with using a different lab next time.  Hopefully I will hit upon a method of colour film photography that gels with me.

Without any further ado, this is my very first roll (almost) ever.  I shot it on Kodak Ektar 100 using my manual focus Canon AE-1 Program camera.  It’s a start but I’m definitely looking forward to experimenting with this medium some more!

You can also view my film photography on Flickr here.

Christmas Day 2013

4620web

We had a nice quiet Christmas at home this year.  It was the first year that we really started telling Scarlett the Santa story and her being able to understand it somewhat.  When she came and woke us up on Christmas morning, we went out to the tree and she exclaimed: “Santa’s not here!”  Daddy said “No but look, he left some presents” and she cried in a concerned voice “Oh dear!”  She thought he had forgotten his presents – it took her a moment to click they were for her.  So very cute!

She had a great time opening all her presents and really loved them all.  Unfortunately she had contracted a skin infection just a couple of days before and before lunch I had to take her to the walk in doctors clinic and get her wounds cleaned which was not a very nice experience for her.  She was a really good girl though.  She fell asleep in the car on the way home, so I even managed to have a nice quiet Christmas lunch with a glass of wine.

Once woken from her nap, Scarlett spent the rest of the day enjoying and playing with all her presents and I was rather pleased that Santa seems to have gotten it right this year 😛  Favourites were all of the Peppa Pig items – a dress, a doll house and a Peppa soft toy, as well as the whiteboard/blackboard/easel and the cheapie xylophone.  I think she will definitely continue to get enjoyment out of her pressies for some time to come.

{Project: Gratitude 2014} Quiet Moments

4747web

This year I am going to be taking part in Project: Gratitude – a new initiative run by the wonderful Jennifer Tonetti-Spellman of Jellybean Pictures.  If you haven’t checked out her work before, you should do it now – any photographer with the slogan “Real is Awesome” is going to be a favourite of mine!  She’s also a very down-to-earth, genuine lady with a great kindness and honesty for teaching others about photography.

The project is a very simple one with no rules which is wonderfully freeing, especially if you’ve ever done a 365 project or the like.  You just shoot the things you are grateful for.  It can be daily, weekly, monthly or whenever you damn well feel like it.  Just be grateful and document it.

Today is the 31st of December 2013 and I am already grateful.  I have had a tough tough tough couple of weeks in 2 year old land.  It has really pushed me to my limits.  Today was Scarlett’s first day care day in about two weeks and I took the day off work to sleep and recover some of my mental wellbeing.  It has felt way too short but so freaking good (and needed!).

So today I am grateful for quiet moments, wherever I am able to salvage them in this madness called motherhood.  I am grateful for a day carer I trust, a partner who supports me, and above all – sweet sweet rejuvenating peaceful silence and stillness.
